The Break of Dawn

December 11, 2005, 6:30 am: I wanted to document my neighborhood just before sunrise and right after. I was inspired by the jazz song, "Take Five" originally composed by Paul Desmond and remade by numerous jazz musicians. The song has a mood that reminded me of the slow yet active early morning. I thought it would be an interesting perspective of my North Philly neighboorhood. I was not sure what I would find, but I met some interesting characters. I met a formerly homeless man living in assisted housing along with teen mothers, and those recently ejected from halfway houses. I met people waiting for trains, buses, car wash attendees and many other "early birds." It was peaceful as compared to the normal activity of my neighborhood. This is my first experiment in "Street Photography."

yeah i like the jazzy touch.
Someone is a little too brave for the streets there woman. This is cool definately not something you observe daily, well not so much for the people. Saw like no smiling faces, i mean what is there to smile about living in such a location. I guess you cannot really blame them. But the greater part is that they get to live life.. better to have life in low standards than have no life at all. Of course some will help themselves to better thing through struggle.
Well i feel like i am rambling, well look at that i am...
Okay, well great shots there E. Definately a thousands words

The Break of Dawn shows life in urban America with a beautiful feel for the city. The title song has been one of my favorites for years. It was the the second jazz piece that made me interested in jazz. The pictures and the music move smoothly together and gives me the feeling of being in right there in Philly grooving with the action of the city. Thanks EFIE for the smooth ride through your neighborhood.I will be looking for more good and beautiful things from you good work.I am proud of you.
E^2 that is a beautiful photo it makes me thankful for the sun creeping up and into my eyes in the morning time. I love the "Ghetto Show", it shows a reality many of us underestimate and don't do enough to understand. Keep doing you, I see big things headed your way girlie. Much love. -CNEL
